International Women in Engineering Day
Yesterday marked International Women in Engineering Day. We at ASTRON are very proud of our women engineers. Two of those are Ágnes Mika and Paula Fusiara.
Origin of fast radio bursts come into focus through polarized light
Non-repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) probably originate from galaxies similar to our Milky Way.
Violette Impellizzeri to head astronomy and operations department
We are excited that Dr Violette Impellizzeri will join ASTRON as head of the Astronomy & Operations department. She will start her new duties on 1 September 2024. Her research focus is on VLBI investigations of the molecular gas enveloping black holes and spectral line analyses.
New calibration technique circumvents Earth’s ionosphere
An international team of researchers has developed a new calibration technique to circumvent disturbances of Earth’s ionosphere.
No strings attached

Normally, our daily images tell you about fibre cables or harddisks, but not this time. This daily image tells you about old-fashioned steel cables and steel discs.
After 50 years of service the lifting platform of the Dwingeloo telescope needed some attention. The steel cables and discs that lift the whole platform were worn out, so we needed to replace them.
Because there was little to no information about the Sordella PG16 elevator, it was a challenge to find out what type of cable and disks were needed. Fun fact: originally this type of elevator was used in Italy to change church bells, so the frond-end of our telescope is our church bell?
Eventually the company Mennens took care of it, changing out 200M of steel cable and more than 80 special made steel disks. The final work will be done this week, so the elevator can work once again hopefully for another 50 years.
