NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Al Gore, former vice president and United States Senator from Tennessee, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Gore, who resides in Nashville, was named by President Joe Biden among 19 recipients of the award, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor and presented to individuals who have made " exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.” The awards will be presented at the White House on Friday.
Gore, who faced off against George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election, is a Nobel Prize winner for his efforts in bringing awareness to global warming.
Other notable names awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom include former Secretary of State John Kerry, Clarence B. Jones, a civil rights activist who helped draft Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, longtime lawmaker Nancy Pelosi and Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky.
