NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Heat causes the most weather-related deaths each year, not floods or hurricanes.

The Mid State could see its first 90° day a little bit ahead of schedule this year. Although this stretch of heat will be short-lived, it’s a good idea to freshen up on the dangers of heat before summer arrives.

The average first 90° day is on May 27 each year, but this year we could see that earlier. The earliest 90° day we’ve had was April 9, 2011. Each year looks different, but averages give us a good idea of when to expect summer-like heat.

In 2022, there were nearly 150 heat-related deaths in the U.S. This beats out all other weather extremes by far and numbers vary year to year.

Heat-related illnesses can happen when the body’s ability to cool itself is challenged or when fluid levels decrease resulting in dehydration.

The two most common heat dangers to be aware of are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. A previous story we did reveals the difference between the two.

Some ways to combat heat-related illnesses are to hydrate, take breaks in the shade (or AC), and if you feel overheated, try taking a cool shower or using a cold compress. In doing this, you can lower your body’s internal temperatures.

As we go deeper into the Spring, and eventually get into Summer, it’ll only get hotter. Now is the time to make sure you have a plan for the hottest days of the year.
