NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Amidst a nightmare of a week, Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin offered the Sullivan family solace in something he loves: baseball.

After 10-year-old Asher was swept into a storm drain following the severe weather this past week, the Sullivan family has spent long hours at the hospital. In a week filled with emotions, the community has showed an outpouring of support for the family. Corbin wanted to pitch in.

“I just was laying in bed last night and thinking about if there was anything that personally we could do to help a healing process just in the short term,” Corbin said.

The legendary coach wanted to give Declan and the family some relief from a trying week, even if only for a few hours. So, Corbin invited Declan to spend time with the Vanderbilt baseball team at Sunday’s series finale against Tennessee.

“The family has been through a ton. Declan himself has been through a ton,” Corbin said. “They’re facing a situation that is difficult. Sports sometimes can bring relief to families and people in times of need, and this is just one of those times.”

Vanderbilt ended up beating the top-ranked Vols 3-0 to avoid the series sweep.

Asher’s father has posted updates about his son’s prognosis on Facebook since the May 8 incident.

On Sunday, he said: ”Asher had a really really rough night. Neurological signs we were seeing as positives have stopped. He had some real tough moments with pulse, blood pressure, and breathing. MRI shows part of the brain herniating into his brain stem, and severe damage to just about all areas of his brain. Despite what we were seeing with Asher each moment, we still were hoping against all odds. Unfortunately, the worst case scenarios seemed to have come true. He’s not in imminent danger at this very moment, but recovery does not seem possible. Kaycee and I have some impossible decisions to make in the next few days that no parents should have to face. Please pray for our family and our sweet Asher.”

Rutherford County Schools are encouraging students to wear blue and green on Monday in honor of Asher. Those are his favorite colors.
