1 killed, 1 injured in shooting in Midtown area

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Nashville Police said one person was killed and another person injured in a shooting in an alley between Hayes and Church streets early Saturday morning.

Homicide detectives are working strong, active leads into the 2:30 a.m. fatal shooting of Christopher Cheeks, 32. A 29-year-old man was also injured. Police believe Cheeks was at the location with friends when three men began interacting with the group.

Police said the 29-year-old victim reported the group was hanging out cordially for some time before the three suspects attempted to rob his group of friends. It was then that he heard gunfire and realized he was struck.

The victim, Cheeks and their other friends ran off in separate directions. The 29-year-old was found on Church Street and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Cheeks was found in the parking garage of the Hayes Street Hotel. He was taken to Vanderbilt where he died.

Police said is appeared no one else was struck by the gunfire.
