Covenant shooting officers receive national ‘Top Cops’ award

Five officers who played a role in thwarting the threat at the school were honored.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Five officers who responded to the Covenant School shooting received the “Top Cops” award by The National Association of Police Organizations this weekend.

Detective Mike Collazo, Sgt. Jeff Mathes, Officer Rex Engelbert, Detective Zach Plese and Detective Ryan Cagle were honored with the NAPO award.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said they received the award for their bravery and heroism during the school shooting, where they all played a role in thwarting the threat on March 27, 2023.

The shooter was shot and killed 11 minutes after the first 911 came in.
